“"The Calluses of Self-Righteousness"”

2 Corinthians 3:14-16

But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.

Thoughts for Today:

In our passage today, the English word "dull" is translated from the Greek word POROO. This word is often used metaphorically in the Bible to indicate spiritual insensitivity. POROO conveys the idea not only of losing the power to perceive and understand, but also a sign of hardening -- like a callus on the skin.

In the same way that constant friction hardens the skin of body, the veil over the face of those who live by the Old Covenant (the Jews), has had the effect of hardening their hearts. In other words, the veil has caused their minds to be dulled to the reality and identity of Jesus Christ. It's the reason we can speak with Jewish people about how Jesus perfectly fulfilled Old Testament prophecy, yet they still won't see Him as Messiah.

So how is the veil removed? It is only when they (or anyone) turn to Christ that they are able to see clearly. (Luke 24:44-45: "Then He said to them, 'These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.' And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.")

Questions to Ponder:

Those of us who try to gain righteousness through our own actions (Law), have a veil over our eyes and understanding. Legalistically-minded people miss the grace of God. His grace is only in Jesus Christ -- and when we turn to His Son -- a revelation of righteousness by grace is revealed to us in the Scriptures as never before seen. Do you have a veil of self-righteousness covering your heart? Have the calluses built up over the years? Jesus is the answer. Only He can take the veil away. Will you turn to Him now?
