2 Corinthians 3:5
Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.
As we read through Paul's letters, we see a strength that comes from God; but we also perceive the weakness of a human being. Paul knew all too well his personal limitations. It would lead him to say (2 Corinthians 12:10): "That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong."
God isn't looking for an ultra-competent, super-human someone to do His will. If He wanted that, He wouldn't have used Paul, He certainly couldn't use me, and He might not have a use for you either. Instead God chooses to use the weak things of the world, the little things, the lesser things, and the insignificant ones to do His will. Why? Because, I for one, have no choice but to look for and find all of my competence and sufficiency in Him. Without Him, I couldn't accomplish a single thing.
Paul wasn't self-delusional. He claimed no competence of his own accord. Rather, he knew everything he had came from God. How many of us would say the same thing? How many of us would not take credit for success because of our own diligence, sacrifice and personal self-discipline? Pride is the first step on the path to downfall. Are you on that slippery slope?
