1 Corinthians 15:46
The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. The first man was of the dust of the earth; the second man is of heaven.
God told Adam in Genesis 3:19b: "...for dust you are and to dust you will return." So it is not coincidental the seventeen elements that make up the dirt of our fields are the same seventeen elements that compose our bodies. Scripture tells us Adam was the first man to experience death (a return to the "dust of the earth"); and Jesus was the first to experience eternal life.
Adam was the best humanity had to offer, yet he failed. As a result, all of humanity must face death (Romans 5:17a: "For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man..."). Because of Adam's action ("the first man") we die; but through the sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus ("the second man"), we have the opportunity to receive eternal life (Romans 5:17b: "...how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!").
Adam and Jesus were the only two men to not have earthly fathers. They were the only ones who knew what it was like to be sinless. But where Adam failed, Jesus succeeded. Because of Adam's rebellion against God, his life brought death to all humanity. Yet, due to the obedience of Jesus, His life and sacrifice produced the gifts of redemption and salvation for all who believe.
Our life in Christ gives us power. We can say "No" to sin. (Romans 6:10-12: "The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.) Are you living with His power, or are you still succumbing to the same old temptations?
