1 Corinthians 15:58
Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
Paul's statements to "stand firm," "let nothing move you," and "know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain," are given with instructions for how to do so. He tells us to "always give yourselves fully to the Lord." Only when our trust is fully reliant and dependent upon the Lord, will we then experience a level of complete commitment, fulfillment and success.
Much of what we do with our own time and energy is in vain. The monuments of our life will eventually fall down, break apart, and be forgotten. However, the effort we spend in serving the Lord -- the worship of Him, the work we do for Him, and the gifts we present to Him -- will never be in vain. On the other hand, when we draw upon our own strength and energy, we will invariably fail.
So even if what we're doing seems small and inconsequential, Paul tells us to know this: "Your labor in the Lord is not in vain." It may not appear to have a great impact, but God's reward is based upon our effort and the attitude of our heart -- not the result. His reward is not predicated upon accomplishment. What perspective should we hold onto as we labor for the Lord? Simply to be faithful to the work He has called us, and let the results be His responsibility.
Throughout Chapter 15, Paul has told us that because of the reality of eternity, what we do on this earth matters. It will determine our heavenly intensity. (1 Corinthians 15:41-42: "The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor. So will it be with the resurrection of the dead.") Do you spend your time with eternity in focus, and as a component of how you spend your time? In which ways are you serving the Lord? What was your last response when God called you to serve His people? The results may be God's responsibility, but the effort is ours. What is the condition of your heart?
