“"Far Greater Promises!"”

2 Corinthians 3:6

He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant--not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

Thoughts for Today:

Just like in Corinth, there are those in our own congregations who say, "Sure, there is grace, but the real issue is following God's law. If you really want to prove how spiritual you are, you will follow all of the rules." Usually these people are the ones who are the most miserable. Why? Because of the mistaken belief that the more miserable someone is, the more spiritual they must be. In our passage today, Paul teaches the polar opposite: The letter (law or regulation) kills, but the Spirit gives life.

In the Old Testament, Mosaic Law condemned humanity. It said that we are all guilty sinners. It was our death sentence. The Law was a single, complete system that demanded perfect obedience to every single statute and nuance. It was simply impossible for anyone to keep the Law all of the time -- except for One -- Jesus.

In contrast, the New Covenant is a work of the Spirit. In it is found: forgiveness (Romans 11:27); righteousness (2 Corinthians 3:9); glory (2 Corinthians 3:8); freedom (2 Corinthians 3:17 and Galatians 5:1); mercy (Hebrews 8:12); life (our passage today); grace (Romans 3:24); faith (Romans 10:6-10); truth (John 14:6); reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18); and justification (Romans 5:1). All of the foregoing are based upon the foundational work of the Cross, and as such, represents far greater promises. So it's not work for us to do, but rather what He has already done! (Hebrews 8:6: "But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, and it is founded on better promises.")

Questions to Ponder:

What are you "working" on? Is it to follow a rule, or obey the Spirit's call upon your heart? It is a great distinction. One leads to life the other death.
