“Are You a God-pleaser or a People-pleaser?”

2 Corinthians 1:12a

Now this is our boast: Our conscience testifies?

Thoughts for Today:

Some Christians do not celebrate in the testimony of their own conscience. In other words, their confidence doesn't come from simply obeying God's Word. Instead, they need and seek the approval of other people. It's a dangerous approach to faith and will always lead to becoming trapped in some unpleasant way. (Proverbs 29:25: "Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.")

Conversely, Paul's goal was to first of all please God. (Galatians 1:10: "Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.") Paul didn't try to please himself, please any other human being, and he certainly wasn't concerned with conformity to other people's way of thinking. Paul's purpose was to be a God-pleaser, not a people-pleaser. Therefore, if his conscience testified that what he did was only to please God, then it was all he needed.

Questions to Ponder:

1 Thessalonians 2:4: "On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts." Are you passing the test? Are you a people-pleaser or a God-pleaser? How so? In what ways have you made pleasing God a priority in your life? How can you?
