1 Corinthians 16:17-19
I was glad when Stephanas, Fortunatus and Achaicus arrived, because they have supplied what was lacking from you. For they refreshed my spirit and yours also. Such men deserve recognition. The churches in the province of Asia send you greetings. Aquila and Priscilla greet you warmly in the Lord, and so does the church that meets at their house.
This is the only mention of Fortunatus and Achaicus in Scripture, so we don't know much about them. What we do know is they were important to Paul personally as well as in his ministry (as our passage today reflects). On the other hand, Aquila and Priscilla should be quite familiar to us, for example:
1. It was in Corinth that Paul first became acquainted with Aquila and his wife Priscilla. (Acts 18:1-3: "After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them, and because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked with them.)
2. Aquila and Priscilla went with Paul to Ephesus and became so strong in their faith, that when Paul left there, he placed Aquila and Priscilla in charge of the fellowship (Acts 18:24-26: "Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.).
3. They later joined Paul in Rome, where a church met in their home (Romans 16:5).
4. Then Aquila and Priscilla returned to Ephesus to help Timothy who would eventually become pastor of the church at Ephesus.
I think Aquila and Priscilla provide for us a wonderful model of a Christian couple who were united in their faith, careers and commitment to serving our Lord. They were willing to move, be flexible, and determined to serve in any way possible.
If you are married, in what ways do you serve with your spouse? Are you united? If unmarried, does our passage today provide additional insight into how service can be both a blessing to, and critical component of, a Christian marriage?
