1 Corinthians 15:48
As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth...
Many of us try to polish and paint our earthly vessels. We go to the hairstylist (at least those who still have hair), the nail salon, tailor, gym -- all in an attempt to improve our physical appearance. In fact, some of us try to do the same thing spiritually. Yet, all of those efforts only detract from the beauty of the treasure within. Paul will say in 2 Corinthians 4:7: "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us." We are of the earth so we are earthly vessels, and therefore, imperfect no matter how hard we try to cover our flaws.
However, at times these feelings of unworthiness can cause God's people to not share their faith, teach Sunday school, mentor high school kids, or serve in other ways. Why? Because of feeling too flawed. From this perspective, they might not be polished, educated, credentialed or articulate enough. Too bad they don't realize how perfectly they fit God's job description. Why? Because people will be amazed at the "treasure" inside of them, not in their personal or professional accomplishments. So whether it is as an individual or a ministry, the key is to get out of the way and let people see the beauty of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He is the treasure within.
A lot of people feel unworthy to serve. But that's not the Lord's perspective. (Psalm 103:8-10: "The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.") In what ways can you serve the Lord? What needs have been expressed at your church? In your community? At school? At work?
