1 Corinthians 14:4a
He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself...
Speaking in tongues is one of the ways the Holy Spirit influences and directs our personal prayer life. It's when we say, "Lord, I don't want to come to you with my ideas and agenda. I want Your Spirit to inspire and guide my conversation with You."
To pray in the Spirit is sometimes groaning, "Oh Lord, I don't know what to do. I don't know what to pray for." Paul knew what it meant to groan (see Romans 8:26). Praying in the Spirit is when we say, "I can't even articulate my situation without You and Your help."
Jude 1:20 confirms what Paul tells us in our passage today: "But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit." In other words, when we pray in the Spirit we build ourselves up. It's for our own edification and benefit.
Are you feeling worn out? Uncertain? Torn down? Tempted to cave in? Do you need direction? Have you tried praying in the Spirit? It is both a powerful force for promoting spiritual growth and providing the type of comfort that can only come from God when we experience difficult circumstances.
