“Standing Firmly on the Word”

1 Corinthians 10:12

So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!

Thoughts for Today:

After freeing the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, God's plan was to lead them directly to the Promised Land. However -- lust, idolatry, sexual immorality, grumbling, and lack of faith -- prevented all but Joshua and Caleb from entering the land God had intended for them. In a similar way, by grace and mercy, the Lord has delivered us from bondage to sin through the blood of His Son Jesus. His plan is for us to live Spirit-filled and fruitful lives while in our mortal bodies. Unfortunately, the sins that prevented the Israelites from entering the Promised Land are the same ones that can keep us from living the productive lives God intended. Therefore, we must stand firm and be careful to not allow our faith in His Word to be eroded. If we do so, a fall is imminent.

Recently, a man spoke to me about his concerns regarding salvation. I asked, "What does the Bible say?" He answered, "It doesn't really matter what the Bible says because it is just man's flawed attempt to interpret the nature of God. I believe in God's grace." I said, "That is exactly your problem -- you don't have a solid foundation for what you believe. It's just an opinion. If you can't trust all of God's Word, then how can you trust any one portion of it? You have very good reason to doubt your salvation."

The man's perspective is a lot more commonplace than some of us might like to think. There are many people who profess to be Christians, yet do not believe the Bible to be the unerring Word of God. Too many consider it full of antiquated concepts with few practical standards. But nothing could be further from the truth. The Bible is not a collection of historical documents, nor simply expressions of human opinion. It is by definition the very Word of the Almighty God -- and therefore represents His commands not suggestions:

2 Peter 3:2: "I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles."

2 Peter 3:16: "He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction."

2 Timothy 3:16: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness."

Anyone not standing firmly on the Word of God -- will most certainly fall. That's more of a promise than a warning.

Questions to Ponder:

On which principles have you built your life? The latest bestselling self-help book or the Bible? Do you seek to follow all of its statutes or only the convenient ones? Do you think you are standing firm, or do you know? Where is your confidence placed -- in your own understanding or the Word? Jesus is the Word. John 1:1-4: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind." What do you believe?
